Correction to: Referendums: increasingly unpopular among the ‘winners’ of modernization? Comparing public support for the use of referendums in Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK, and Hungary

Using data from the 2012 European Social Survey (ESS) and 2017 Polpart survey we compare public support for use of referendums in Switzerland, Netherlands, UK, Hungary before after on Mass Immigration (2014), EU–Ukraine Relations (2016), Brexit EU Migrant Quota (2016). We show that overall referendum declined between all countries, but especially Netherlands where government openly challenged merits direct democracy. also provide evidence became more strongly linked to so-called losers modernization (i.e. politically dissatisfied, socio-economically disadvantaged, or anti-immigration individuals) countries except Switzerland. However, changes determinants are driven by a decline among winners satisfied, advantaged, pro-immigration rather than an increase whose attitudes stayed less same. Furthermore, argue association towards differs contexts government-initiated versus government-challenging.
